Holidays abroad have been cancelled for many, and if yours hasn’t maybe you don’t really want all the bother of getting away while there is still the possibility of picking up the nasty virus. We look set to have ours cancelled and though we always off set our carbon – is it time we ditched long distance for holidaying at home?
Over the next few days/weeks the Rumage team will be posting ideas for holidaying in the UK and in even in the garden. We will try to cater for all budgets but look for the different and the interesting. Places we’ve been over the years with friends and family as well as things we’ve tried at home.
Part 1 is all about luxury
Though not affordable for us all, there are times when we need a little bit of paradise, even for a night. Here are our picks of 5 hotels in the UK. Maybe not for every budget but these finds are a wonderful escape from it all – even just for a meal.
The Red Lion
Run by a ‘family’ of passionate individuals The Red Lion is the perfect place to have a family get together, they have pub tables and private dining rooms.
You can stay at Troutbeck, their 5-room guest house, just a stone’s throw from the pub. In this rural escape you can relax and watch the River Avon from the comfort of a private deck and then hike in the stunning Wiltshire countryside. I can personally vouch for the amazing chocolate brownie – the chef gave me the receipt.
The Museum Inn
The Museum Inn is an award-winning pub with bedrooms set in the heart of Dorset. Here you can stay the night in one of the eight elegant bedrooms and savour the sumptuous dishes from the seasonal menu. Larger groups can also stay at Moles Cottage, a self-contained cottage that sleeps up to 16 people – so you can enjoy time together.
Calcot & Spa
Calcot & Spa is set in 220 acres in the Cotswolds. A relaxing hotel with a Spa as well as both an indoor and outdoor pool. This makes this perfect place for the whole family.
Eating can take place in the busy and cheerful GumStool Inn or the Conservatory which serves the best of local – all eaten looking out over the grounds. They are fully geared up all family members with amazing rooms that cater for all and lots to do!
Limewood Hotel
The Limewood Hotel is set in the heart of the New Forest National Park. This is the best of laid-back luxury– a place that feels amazing, caters for all and has lots on offer from cookery classes, to the amazing Herb House Spa.
Hartnett Holder & Co is relaxed Italian restaurant where chefs Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder cook up a storm. I’ve never been able to stay here but have lunched many times and visited the Spa for the day as a treat for a birthday.
What I love about all these places is that they really do let you relax and unwind and they all welcome children and mine really rose to the occasion because they were treated like people.
A little more grown up
Situated in the beautiful Cornish village of St. Tudy the St.Tudy Inn has a warm and cosy atmosphere and a passion for simple, rustic cuisine, real ales and fine wines. They came in No.33 in the Top 50 Gastro Pub Awards in 2020. The restaurant celebrates the finest seasonal produce from the surrounding area. It has four beautifully appointed rooms that have been converted from a derelict barn, next door to the Inn.
